In the opening golf match of the 2009 season Georgetown Prep defeated Good Counsel 8-1 on Monday, March 23rd at Manor CC in Rockville, Md. Skies were mostly clear but temps were mostly in the 50's for much of the afternoon. The matches were each 12 holes long.
Denny McCarthy, sophomore, shot even par (35) on the front nine en route to a 5&3 victory over George Bushby. Sam Spikell, sophomore, won his match over Bobby Kessler 3&2. The team easily won the best ball point as well. First foursome: Prep -3 GC - 0
In the second match Matt Brown, senior, won his point on the 11th hole after knocking his tee shot within birdie range. Mike Marcus, senior, struggled through much of the front side and eventually fell 2&1. The points were split; the best ball went to Prep when Brown canned a 30-footer on the 12th to garner the extra point. Second foursome: Prep - 2 GC - 1
The final match of the afternoon came down to the final hole. Jack Myers, senior, finished with four straight pars to eke out a 1up victory over Connor Farrell. Tom Horton, junior, chipped in for a birdie on the last hole to win his match and clinch the best ball point as well. Third foursome: Prep 3 GC -0
