The 2009 local summer junior golf season has come to an end and I have compiled a list of the top point winners for the six major junior tournaments held in the Washington, DC area. These are the Frank Emmet Schoolboy (June 22-24), the Mid Atlantic Junior (June 25-26), the Maryland State Junior (June 29-30), the Bobby Gorin (July 20-22), the Bob Riley Junior Open (August 3-4), and the Dewey Ricketts (August 10-12).

The points are awarded on the following basis:

The Schoolboy is a three-day event as is the Dewey Ricketts, with cuts each day. The Mid Atlantic, the Maryland State, and the Bob Riley are all two-day affairs with one cut, and the Bobby Gorin is the only match play event. If a player was cut after the second day, he was awarded points based on the remaining number of players in the field regardless of his position.
I have limited the selection to just the older age group in some of the tournaments for calculation purposes.
I recognize that these points are chosen arbitrarily and subject to some argument. They are NOT used to determine the WMGA Junior Player of the Year. I feel certain that performance in other tournaments such as USGA qualifiers, the Williamson Cup and the Mid Atlantic Team Invitational will probably be taken into consideration as well as these six when the Committee meets to select the POY.
Having said that, I do believe that Matt Brown has had an extraordinary Summer season AND he played in all six tournaments. Not all players can lay claim to that.
But given his performance on the National Stage both at the USGA JR and the USGA AM as well as the Big "I" Insurance Classic, Denny McCarthy will probably be selected.
Of interest to me are the names of certain players who are no where to be found in the Top 25. Ben Warnquist has disappeared from the local events. Tyler Wingo isn't at any of these six nor were Joe Buttgereit and Jay Dove.

Matt Brown Finishes Second in Dewey Ricketts

Matt Brown watched in disbelief as Robert Zehnder made a triple bogey 7 on the 18th at Hidden Creek. He had been eating his lunch while watching the action from the veranda overlooking the course when it suddenly occurred to him that there might be a playoff and he should get ready. Previously, Matt had discounted any thought of a victory because Zehnder's three birdies on the back nine had given him a comfortable lead going in to the last hole. But the winner made his final putt to avoid a Van de Velde finish.
Matt played very consistently through the three days with rounds of 74-75-75. He trailed the first day leader Robert Lobban by 5 shots, but he was only one back after his second round to Lobban and Zehnder. He couldn't match the torrid birdie pace that Zehnder put on the board in the third round, however.
Teammate Mike Marcus opened with an outstanding 70 in the first round that left him one shot behind the leader, but his second (82) and third (83) dropped him well down the board. This was the final junior tournament for both Matt and Michael as they head off to college at the end of the month. Matt is going to Furman while Mike is headed to Boston College.

Denny McCarthy played two exceptional rounds of golf on the two courses of the historic Oak Hill complex in Rochester, NY to take the individual Williamson Cup title while leading the WMGA Junior Team to a second place finish(McCarthy (67-70--137), Greg Bourdon (74-78--152), Alex Church (73-80--153) and Jordan Sweet (74-80--154). The low three of four scores count in each round of the competition.
Denny's opening 67 tied him with Gavin Hall and Yarik Merkulov over the West Course. In the afternoon Denny bogeyed the first two holes and completed the front nine in 3-over. Hall and Merkulov were both one-over. After bogeys by Hall (11) and Merkulov (12) their lead was down to one. Then Denny got hot and birdied 13, 14,and the difficult 17th while his opponents both made two bogeys on the final few holes.
Greg had his troubles with the big numbers in the afternoon as he recorded a triple and 2 doubles. He tied for 14th.

Matt Brown opened the first round of the Bob Riley Open (formerly the Washington Metro Junior Open) with a 73 that put him in a tie for third behind Garrett Fitzgerald (71) and Justin Butler (72); Greg Bourdon shot an opening 76 that tied him 10th. I should point out that Justin Butler is a rising junior at Prep but he plays tennis during the school season and golf during the summer.
Fitzgerald duplicated his 71 as he cruised to an easy 7 stroke win with a 142. Matt slipped to a 79 (152) while Greg shot another 76 for his 152. Justin tumbled way down the board with an 87 for 159.

Washington Post Fails Again; So Does USGA
I read with dismay the recent articles in the Washington Post (Monday, August 23, 2009 and Tuesday, August 24, 2009) regarding Kevin McLister and the USGA Am in OK. I have no idea who Kevin is other than what I read in the article. He has never shown up on the radar of any of the local junior tournaments when he was a junior. He is now a student at Delaware. But he isn't my concern or question.
I was truly angered that the Post would devote 24" of column space to this article (plus photo) and NOT mention the other local players. Yes, I know that Denny McCarthy is a local player and I have more than a passing interest in his success. But what about Zach Lese and Steve Delmar? Why did the Post choose to ignore them?
So I ripped off an email to the offending "journalist", Bill Oram, who responded with "Bob, Thanks for your note. I had no idea that these other golfers had qualified. From what I'd found Kevin seemed to be the one who was closest to DC. I've forwarded your note to our editors encouraging them to put in the scores from these other golfers in future days.
Thank you for reading."
What kind of "journalist" is Bill Oram? He could not find the info? Just check the web site for the USGA! There is a list of local qualifiers. He could have checked the one that Kevin McLister played in and noted that Denny played there as well! As my mother was fond of saying "Bend your knees." - meaning you've got to put some effort into looking!But I realize that the Washington Post has NOT covered a single important local Junior Golf tournament this entire summer. They did run a short blurb when Denny won the Big "I", probably fed from the tournament itself. Rip and print stuff. Not one mention of the Schoolboy - oldest junior tournament in the area, which was celebrating its 75th! They use to cover that tournament every day - in depth. They don't "cover" anything anymore. Just look at any other local summer sport. No golf, no swimming, no track and field. But they will print "fluff" pieces they think show their in-depth coverage of sensitive issues. Please, they don't cover because they won't cover.

Ken Klavon is the hack who "reports" on the USGA tournament, this time at the AM in OK. He files a number of articles each and every day so it might be safe to assume that he might miss some facts or two.
BUT in his "Amateur Story lines" he indicates all the junior players in the field and he fails to include Denny AND he lists all the juniors who played in the USGA JR AM and are playing in the Amateur AND again fails to include Denny! He even lists Kevin McLister as 39 and a Mid-Amateur. I think Kevin is 20.
Aggravating that these "journalists" get paid for putting material out there and they can't bother to cover the facts or get ALL the facts.

He wrote a good article on Denny's feats at the Big "I" earlier and managed to get a few other bits in the piece as well. So how does Kevin get it right and the Washington Post and the USGA get it wrong. Easy. The other writers shanked it.

McCarthy Falters in Second Round at US AM; Strang, Cohan, & Bourdon Tie in AJGA

Denny McCarthy came up short of making the cut for the match play portion of the USGA Amateur at Southern Hills CC in Tulsa, OK. He fired a three-over 73 on the very tough Southern Hills course on Monday but slipped on the longer but seemingly easier scoring Cedar Ridge course today. He closed with a double bogey on 17 and a bogey on 18 for a 78 = 151. There will be a playoff for four slots tomorrow am for all those who shot 148.
He was the low individual from the local area and he tied for 7th among all the juniors who played in the field of 312. He tied for 122.
In the AJGA tournament at Kingsmill this week Wes Strang, Nate Cohan, and Greg Bourdon all shot 76 to finish tied for 37th. There a number of local players in this field including Jordan Sweet (69), Tyler Wingo (73), Mason Short (73), Jerrel Parrish (75), Connor Tendall (77), and Jay Pinkos (83). There are two more days to play

Was quite please to see so many current players as well as former players trying out for the Washington Metropolitan Golf Association Amateur. This is the biggest amateur event for the year in the DC area.
Matt Brown continued his strong showing this summer by making it into the match play field after qualifying rounds. Jonathan Biava (07) just missed while Dan Hathway (07) and Tom Shapiro (05) did qualify.
Matt won his first round match over Colin St. Maxens in 19 holes and then defeated Josh Apple in the second round with a one-up victory. Matt dispatched Chris Miller 4&3 in the quarterfinals to gain the semis. St. Maxens won the Gorin earlier while Miller plays for UMD.
Matt's semifinal match was against the eventual champion Brendan Kelly (Villanova) but Matt would not go down without a fight. He had a chance to take a 1 up lead on the 16th hole but a four-footer just missed. Then he made a good up-an-down on 17 to halve the hole. Both players had about 20-foot birdie putts on 18 but neither could convert. Then on the 19th hole Matt left his first putt woefully short and missed a ten-footer that gave the match to Kelly.
Matt showed a lot of grit against some very good older competition.

Was quite please to see so many current players as well as former players trying out for the Washington Metropolitan Golf Association Amateur. This is the biggest amateur event for the year in the DC area.
Matt Brown continued his strong showing this summer by making it into the match play field after qualifying rounds. Jonathan Biava (07) just missed while Dan Hathway (07) and Tom Shapiro (05) did qualify.

Medalist Sam Spikell survived another slow front nine similar to yesterday but rallied on the back to best Brett Myers in 19 holes. Sam was also 2 down at the turn to his second round opponent Kevin Keehan but his miracle back nine did not happen and he lost 2 up.
Nate Cohan had to go to extra holes in his first round victory over Brian McCormick but his back caused him a great deal of distress in the afternoon and he had to default his match to Jason Clatworthy.
Greg Bourdon stunned Connor Tendall with solid golf as he cruised to a 5&4 victory in his first match of the day. This was somewhat of an upset because Greg has been in Argentina for six weeks and hasn't really been able to practice much. He lost to Richie Steinwand in the afternoon 3&1.
Colin St. Maxens won final with a resounding 6&5 win over Richie Steinwand.
No Prep golfers played in the 14-15 age group bracket which was won by Alex Church by a 2&1 margin over Keegan Boone.

Sam Spikell earned medalist honors at the 50th Bobby Gorin Memorial with a score of 72 at today's qualifying. Sam fired a three-over 39 on the front and was not particularly happy as he made the turn but he managed to birdie 13, 15, 16, and 17 before he tripped on 18 for a bogey.
Nate Cohan's 73 looked like it would tie for medalist for a while but Sam came in with the last group. Greg Bourdon (76) had to survive a 7 for 3 playoff and did so with a par on the first hole. MCarthy Qualifies 15th in USGA JR; Loses in Second Round of Match Play

Denny McCarthy was the only local junior to advance to the match play portion of the USGA Junior AM after posting scores of 72-74= 146 which was strong enough to tie for 15th spot. His first round score of even par 72 put him at tied for 28th in the field of 156. Denny made 7 birdies and 1 eagle in his 36 holes of qualifying.
Sean Bosdosh made the next best local showing with rounds of 81-77 = 158 that tied him for 97th; Ben Warnquist got off to a good start with a 74 but followed with an 85 for 159 that left him at tied for 110th; and Tyler Wingo posted 81-84 = 165 which put him at tied for 136th.
Denny was seeded 16th in the match play tree and drew Garrett Moss of Arizona in his first round match. After falling behind on the 4th hole, Denny rallied for a 3& 1 victory while shooting one-over par. In his second round he played Yosuke Asaji of Japan who wielded a hot hand as he shot three-under. Denny lost the first hole and never got closer than that the rest of the day and lost 3&2 despite being even on the day.
Had he won that match Denny would have faced Jordan Spieth, the eventual winner and #1 ranked junior player in the country. Asaji shot 5-over in his match with Speith and lost 2&1.Wonder how Denny would have fared.
This was Denny's second USGA JR AM having played two years ago. He joins Wes Strang and Greg Carlin as Georgetown Prep students who have played in two USGA Juniors.

McCarthy carded 70-73 = 143 while his Prep teammates Wes Strang (75-74 = 149) and Matt Brown (76-74=150) also contributed for both rounds. Prep was the only high school from Maryland to have more than one representative. Colin St. Maxens shot 141 to become the medalist over the River course at Kingsmill in Williamsburg, VA.
Maryland Juniors easily won by 19 shots over their counterparts from VA and WVA 871-890-921.

Matt Brown shot the second low round of the second day (73) to move up to fourth place in the Maryland State Jr with a total of 151. Josh Eure, the All-Met Golfer of the Year captured his third straight MD Jr with rounds of 70-72= 142, good for a seven shot victory.
Wes Strang posted 74 - 80 = 154 for 12th place while Denny McCarthy slipped a bit coming off a spectular week where he won the Frank Emmet Schoolboy, the MidAtlantic Jr, and Argyle CC's Men's stroke play tournament with rounds of 67-73 = 130! Denny shot 77-79=156. Chris Rolle carded an 87 in the first round and did not make the cut while Nate Cohan had to withdraw.

McCarthy Repeats as MidAtlantic Jr Champ

Denny McCarthy rallied on the second day to repeat as MidAtlantic Junior Champion with rounds of 73- 70 = 143 (one-under) at Lakewood CC in Rockville.
Nate finished in fourth place with a 73-76 = 149. Matt had back-to-back 77s for 154 and 13th place.
For the second tournament this season as well as the second year in a row, Sean Bosdosh finished second! He closed to within one shot on 16 with a birdie but hit his tee shot on 17 into the back bunker and made a bogey.
Denny made four birdies on the day with the most spectacular a chip in on the difficult 11th from about 80 feet. Nate birdied the 16th to get to 3 over par but a 5 on 17 and a 5 on 18 dropped him back.

Denny McCarthy rallied on the second day to repeat as MidAtlantic Junior Champion with rounds of 73- 70 = 143 (one-under) at Lakewood CC in Rockville.
Nate finished in fourth place with a 73-76 = 149. Matt had back-to-back 77s for 154 and 13th place.
For the second tournament this season as well as the second year in a row, Sean Bosdosh finished second! He closed to within one shot on 16 with a birdie but hit his tee shot on 17 into the back bunker and made a bogey.
Denny made four birdies on the day with the most spectacular a chip in on the difficult 11th from about 80 feet. Nate birdied the 16th to get to 3 over par but a 5 on 17 and a 5 on 18 dropped him back.

Denny McCarthy led a field of 45 qualifiers with a 36-hole total of even par 71-71 = 141. He was five shots better than Tyler Wingo (Paul VI) who got in with a 71-75 = 146. Ralph Blasey (Landon)took first alternate with 72 - 76 = 148. Denny was the only player from Prep trying to qualify in this field. This Denny's second trip to the National tournament to be held in Bedminster, NJ at Trump National GC.
In the qualifier at Worthington Manor on June 18, Sean Bosdosh topped a field of 53 with rounds of 70 -71 = 141. Ben Warnquist qualified in the final spot with 72-73 = 145. Wes Strang just missed out on making it to his third US JR AM with 74-72 = 146 to garner first alternate slot.

Marcus Finishes 3rd at Easterns; Team Takes Second in 4-Man and Wins 3-Man

Senior Mike Marcus capped his high school golfing career with his best showing ever by shooting 76 - 72 = 145 to take third place in the rain shortened Eastern Prep School tournament at Wintonbury Hills Golf Course in West Hartford, CT.
Congratulations to Mike Marcus, Chris Brown, Tom Horton, and Nate Cohan who won the 3-man portion of the 93rd Easterns (The Frank Heyniger Bowl). This is the oldest interscholastic golf tournament in the country.
Kudos especially to Mike who finished strong despite starting the tournament with a quad on the very first hole! He was even par for 35 of 36 holes! His 72 on the second day tied for the second low round of the whole field, which was shortened by a day because of lightning and rain. Mike's finish earned him All-Eastern honors.
Chris also did very well considering he hadn't played for most of the spring. He shot 79-75= 154 - good for a tie for 8th. Tom shot 82-79 = 161 for 16th and Nate posted 82-80=162 for 17th.
The three man total of 464 topped Avon Old Farms by three shots.
In the four man Horace Taft Cup Brunswick swept to a 28 stroke victory with an impressive (304-293=597). We finished second despite improving by thirteen strokes on the second day (319-306=625). We beat out Avon (637), Loomis Chaffee (666), Williston (679), Northfield Mount Hermon (679), and Choate (685).

Denny McCarthy won the 75th annual Frank Emmet Schoolboy at Columbia Country Club by an impressive 14 strokes over the field after a final round three-under 67. He made three birdies on the front side to offset a bogey at the par three #8. He then made a curling up-hill 25 footer for birdie on #12 to flirt with the course record. He double bogeyed the short 16th over water before making a birdie putt on 17 and then two-putting for par on 18.
Sean Bosdosh (a home schooled student)snatched second place from Matt Brown's grasp with his final round 70. Matt missed putts on 17 and 18 that would have made him runner-up. Teammate Sam Spikell took 4th place on a match of cards with Alex Hoffman and Ben Warnquist.
Denny McCarthy is the tenth Georgetown Prep golfer to have won this event named for the man most responsible for starting junior golf in the Washington DC metro area. Mr. Emmet designed the first nine-hole golf course at Prep back in the late 20s.

Nationwide Tour Event for Juniors

Two dozen of the best high school golfers from Maryland competed Monday morning in the Melwood Prince George's Open High School Invitational. Several county schools were represented in the best ball event at the Country Club at Woodmore in Mitchellville.
Denny McCarthy (Georgetown Prep) won the overall title with a one-over-par 73, and he was a member of the winning quartet that recorded a low round of 64. Myles Handy (DeMatha), Phil Fluke and Olivia Bowling (St. Mary's Ryken) rounded out the foursome. McCarthy had six birdies on the day, good enough to counter five bogeys and one double bogey.
Each member of the winning team was provided with miniature replica trophies of the one that will be presented to the winner of the Melwood Prince George's County Open on Sunday. McCarthy also will receive his trophy Sunday afternoon on the 18th green when the Melwood Open trophy is presented to the winner of the Nationwide Tour event.
Each of the other five remaining groups finished with the identical score of 69. Nicole West (Charles H. Flowers) fired the low round among girls with a 79, which was good for fourth overall. West and teammates Jason Clatworthy (St. Vincent Pallotti), Jason Park (Eleanor Roosevelt) and Max Farrington (Archbishop Spalding) made up one of the groups.
Gavin Thompson (Flowers) was in the same group with individual runner-up Josh Eure (South River), James Fitzgerald (Gonzaga) and Mary Reynolds (St. John's). Gabriella Sinkovic (Bowie) was in the same quartet with Sean Bosdosh (Covenant Life), Garrett Harding (South River) and Chris Biggins (Atholton). Kevin Poole (Pallotti) had initially been scheduled to play but opted out last week.

Matt Brown (capt.) dashed the upset hopes of Adam Stowe of Episcopal who waited patiently by the 18th green to see if anyone would beat his two-under round of 69. Matt's birdie putt on the short closing par 5 enabled him to win his first major high school individual championship with a three-under 68. The tournmanet was played over the White/Blue nines at Shenandoah Valley Golf Club.
Last year's winner, Denny McCarthy, struggled with his putter throughout the day and posted one-over 72 to tie for third along with teammate Nate Cohan. Wes Strang and Greg Bourdon tied for tenth with 76s while Sam Spikell shot 82.
Prep won its fourth straight IAC tournament title with a record round of 364, good for a 22 stroke victory. Bullis tied Landon for second place in the tournament when Valanos came in late with a 76 to save a portion of the day.
