McCarthy win Frank Emmet Schoolboy

June 22-24, 2009

Denny McCarthy won the 75th annual Frank Emmet Schoolboy at Columbia Country Club by an impressive 14 strokes over the field after a final round three-under 67. He made three birdies on the front side to offset a bogey at the par three #8. He then made a curling up-hill 25 footer for birdie on #12 to flirt with the course record. He double bogeyed the short 16th over water before making a birdie putt on 17 and then two-putting for par on 18.
Sean Bosdosh (a home schooled student)snatched second place from Matt Brown's grasp with his final round 70. Matt missed putts on 17 and 18 that would have made him runner-up. Teammate Sam Spikell took 4th place on a match of cards with Alex Hoffman and Ben Warnquist.
Denny McCarthy is the tenth Georgetown Prep golfer to have won this event named for the man most responsible for starting junior golf in the Washington DC metro area. Mr. Emmet designed the first nine-hole golf course at Prep back in the late 20s.

If the tournament awarded a team title based on just the first round scores, then Georgetown Prep would have won it easily. Of note, at least to me, was that the Private schools of the area did significantly better than the Public Schools.
Also, there were several interesting players who chose NOT to play in this the MOST presitigious Summer Junior Tournament in the Washington DC Metro area. Josh Eure, Joe Buttgereit, Jay Dove, and Tyler Wingo - all of whom were selected first team All- Met this spring. On the Honorable Mention list and missing were: Bose, Ritter, Cutter, Ehrhardt, Hughes, Hyun, Jaeger, Lister, O'Shell, Park, Parrish, Pinkos, Poole, Raison, Stowe.
Unofficial Team Totals:
